This lesson is about the home. You will learn words for rooms like kitchen and bedroom, words for furniture like table and chair, and words that tell us where things are, like on, under and next to. These words help you talk about your house and the things in it.

🚫Common mistake

Don't say 'The lamp is in the table.' A lamp sits on top of a table, so you must say 'on the table.' Use 'in' only for things inside a space, like 'in the box' or 'in the kitchen.'

💡Note

'Living room' is two words, but 'bedroom' and 'bathroom' are one word. Be careful with spelling.

⚠️Caution

A wardrobe (for clothes) is in the bedroom. A cupboard (for dishes and food) is in the kitchen. They look similar but go in different rooms.

Rules

  1. 1Rooms are places in a house: kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, living room, hall, and garden.
  2. 2Furniture and objects are things we put in rooms: table, chair, bed, sofa, wardrobe, lamp, shelf, mirror, fridge, cooker, cupboard, and carpet.
  3. 3Prepositions of place tell us where something is: in, on, under, next to, behind, between, and in front of.
  4. 4Use 'on' for things that touch a surface — like 'on the table' or 'on the wall'. Use 'in' for things inside a space — like 'in the kitchen' or 'in the cupboard'.
  5. 5A wardrobe is for clothes (in the bedroom). A cupboard is for dishes and food (in the kitchen). Do not mix them up.
  6. 6The hall is the room you walk through when you enter a house. It is not a room for living or sleeping.
