How to Answer an Odd-One-Out Question
  1. 1Step 1: Read all the words carefully. Example: beach, seaside, lake, mountain
  2. 2Step 2: Think about what each word means. Beach = sand and sea. Seaside = area near the sea. Lake = water with land around it. Mountain = a very high hill.
  3. 3Step 3: Find what three of the words have in common. Beach, seaside and lake are all places with water.
  4. 4Step 4: Choose the word that does not belong. Mountain is the odd one out — it has no water.
🚫Common mistake

Don't mix up 'seaside' and 'seasight'. 'Seaside' is the area next to the sea. 'Seasight' is not a real English word — don't use it!

💡Note

Many holiday words can be both nouns and verbs: 'a swim' (noun) and 'to swim' (verb), 'a walk' (noun) and 'to walk' (verb).

⚠️Caution

Always say 'take photos', not 'make photos'. The verb 'make' is wrong with 'photos' in English.

Rules

  1. 1Holiday places answer the question 'Where?': beach, seaside, mountains, countryside, campsite, hotel, island, lake.
  2. 2Holiday activities answer the question 'What do you do?': swim, sunbathe, go sightseeing, take photos, go camping, relax, explore.
  3. 3Hotel facilities are things inside a hotel: swimming pool, reception, restaurant.
  4. 4Holiday items are things you take with you or use: suitcase, passport, ticket, map, tent, sunglasses.
  5. 5The verb 'take' is used with 'photos' — never say 'make photos'.
  6. 6Some words can be both things and actions. For example, you can 'swim' (action) and you can go for 'a swim' (thing).
