Words for transport and travelling.

When we go from one place to another, we use transport. Cars, buses, and trains are all kinds of transport. This lesson helps you learn words for different vehicles, the people who use them, and what we do when we travel.

passenger — a person who travels in a car, bus, train, or plane but does not drive it
driver — the person who drives a vehicle
journey — travel from one place to another, especially a long one
ticket — a piece of paper or card that shows you can travel
platform — the place next to the tracks where you wait for a train

✎How to use 'catch' and 'miss'
  1. 1On time: You go to the bus stop early. You CATCH the bus.
  2. 2Too late: You arrive late. The bus leaves without you. You MISS the bus.
  3. 3The rule: catch = you go onto it. miss = you do not go onto it because you were late.
🚫Common mistake

Do NOT say 'ride a car'. You RIDE a bike or a horse, but you DRIVE a car or GET IN a car.

⚠️Caution

'Get on' and 'get off' are for big vehicles like buses, trains, and planes. For smaller vehicles like cars and taxis, use 'get in' and 'get out of'.

💡Note

A 'trip' is usually short (a trip to the shop). A 'journey' is often longer and takes more time.

Rules

  1. 1We use 'drive' for cars, but we use 'ride' for bikes and horses.
  2. 2'Catch' means to go onto a bus or train on time. 'Miss' means you are too late to get on.
  3. 3'Get on' and 'get off' are for buses, trains, and planes. For cars and taxis we say 'get in' and 'get out of'.
  4. 4'Station' is where trains stop. 'Airport' is where planes land and take off.
  5. 5'Journey' and 'trip' both mean travel from one place to another. A journey is often longer.
  6. 6'Passenger' is a person who travels in a vehicle. 'Driver' is the person who drives it.
