Listening: A Conversation About a Talent

Listen to two friends talking about a talented person, then answer the questions.

In a listening task, first read the questions so you know what to listen for. Next, listen once to understand the main idea and who is speaking. Then listen a second time and focus on the details — names, numbers, times, and reasons. Always base your answer on what you actually hear, not on what you think you know.

Key terms

key words — Important words in a question that tell you what to listen for.
gist — The general idea or main topic of a conversation.
detail — A small piece of specific information, such as a name, a number, or a time.
inference — Understanding something that is not said directly but is clear from the conversation.
context — The situation around the conversation — who is talking, where they are, and what they are talking about.
speaker — The person who is talking. In a dialogue, each line comes from a different speaker.

Listen for the general idea first. Do not worry about understanding every single word on the first listen.

🚫Common mistake

Do not choose an answer just because you hear one word from that choice in the audio. The full meaning of the sentence is what counts.
