Listening: A Talk About the Future

Listen to a short talk about technology and life in the future, then answer the questions.

In a listening task, first read the questions to know what information to look for. During the first listen, try to get the general meaning — do not worry about every word. On the second listen, focus on the specific details you need to answer the questions. Always check that your answer matches what the speaker actually said, not what you think is true.

Key terms

key words — Important words that carry the main meaning of what you hear.
gist — The general idea or overall meaning of a listening text.
detail — A specific piece of information, like a name, place, number or time.
main idea — The most important point the speaker wants you to understand.
prediction — Guessing what you will hear based on the questions and the topic.
inference — Understanding something not said directly by using clues from what you hear.

Key words are your best friends. When you hear words like 'robot', 'train' or 'school', you know what the speaker is talking about.
