Listening: An Interview with a Change-maker

Listen to an interview with someone who helps their community, then answer the questions.

Before you listen, read the questions quickly so you know what to listen for. During the first listen, try to understand the general idea — who is speaking and what the interview is about. During the second listen, focus on details like numbers, names, and reasons. Remember, all the answers come from what you hear, not from your own knowledge.

Key terms

key words — The most important words in a question that tell you what to listen for, like names, numbers, or action words.
gist — The general idea or main topic of what someone is saying, without focusing on small details.
detail — A specific piece of information, like a name, a number, a place, or a time.
inference — An idea you understand from what the speaker says, even if they do not say it directly.
distractor — A wrong answer choice that sounds possible but does not match what the speaker actually said.

The host and guest speak clearly. Listen for the speaker labels HOST and GUEST to follow who is talking.

Do not use your own knowledge about recycling or volunteering. Answer only from what you hear in the audio.

🚫Common mistake

A common mistake is choosing an answer because it uses words from the audio. A distractor can use the same words but mean something different. Always check the full meaning.
