Listening: A Talk About the Environment

Listen to a talk about an environmental topic, then answer the questions.

In a listening task with a short talk, first listen for the general topic and the speaker's main message — do not try to understand every single word. On your second listen, pay close attention to specific details like numbers, reasons, and examples that the questions ask about. Read the questions before the second listening so you know exactly what to listen for. Remember that some questions test your understanding of the speaker's overall idea, not just one word or phrase.

Key terms

key words — Important words in the audio that carry the main meaning or help answer a question.
gist — The general idea or main topic of what the speaker is talking about.
detail — A specific piece of information such as a number, a name, a place, or a reason.
inference — A conclusion you reach by thinking about what the speaker said, even if it was not stated directly word for word.
context — The situation or background that helps you understand the meaning of unfamiliar words in the audio.

Before the audio plays, read all the questions quickly. This helps you know what information to listen for during each clip.

⚠️Caution

The speaker will not say every answer word for word. Some questions ask about the main idea, so you need to understand the whole message.

🚫Common mistake

A common mistake is to choose the first answer that uses a word you heard in the audio. The speaker may mention a wrong choice but give a different answer — listen to the full sentence before deciding.
