Environmental Problems

Words for environmental problems and protecting nature.

This lesson covers key vocabulary about environmental problems — what harms our planet and how we can help. You will learn words like pollution, climate change, and deforestation, as well as solutions like recycling and renewable energy. Understanding these words will help you talk and write about one of the most important topics in English.

Key terms

pollutionharmful substances that damage the air, water, or soil
deforestationcutting down large areas of trees, often causing damage to nature
renewable energyenergy from sources that do not run out, like the sun, wind, and water
habitatthe natural home or environment of an animal or plant
ecosystema community of living things and their physical environment, all depending on each other
Environmental Problems vs Solutions
ProblemSolution
Pollution — harmful substances in air, water, soilRecycle — turn waste into new products
Deforestation — cutting down forestsConserve — use resources carefully
Emissions — gases released into the airRenewable energy — clean energy from sun, wind, water
Waste — unwanted materials thrown awayReduce — use less and create less waste
Global warming — rising Earth temperatureProtect — keep the environment safe from harm

Every environmental problem has one or more solutions. Learning both sets of words helps you discuss the topic fully.

Using Environmental Vocabulary in Context
  1. 1Describing a problem: Air pollution from factories is a serious issue in big cities. It harms people's health and damages the ecosystem.
  2. 2Describing a solution: We can reduce pollution by using renewable energy and recycling our waste. Everyone can help protect the environment.
  3. 3Connecting nature words: Deforestation destroys the habitat of many animals, which threatens wildlife and upsets the whole ecosystem.
🚫Common mistake

Do not confuse 'weather' and 'climate.' Weather is what happens today (rain, sun). Climate is the average weather over many years. 'Climate change' is about long-term patterns, not daily weather.

💡Note

The prefix 're-' appears in many environmental solution words: recycle (cycle again), reduce (bring down), reuse (use again), renewable (able to be renewed).

⚠️Caution

'Global warming' and 'climate change' are related but not the same. Global warming is rising temperatures; climate change also includes extreme weather, melting ice, and rising seas.

Rules

  1. 1Problem words (pollution, waste, deforestation, emissions) describe things that damage the environment.
  2. 2Solution words (recycle, conserve, reduce, protect) describe actions that help the environment.
  3. 3Nature words (environment, habitat, wildlife, ecosystem) describe the natural world and living things.
  4. 4'Climate change' is the overall change in weather patterns; 'global warming' is specifically the rise in Earth's temperature.
  5. 5'Endangered' is an adjective used for species at risk of dying out — you cannot say 'endangered pollution.'
  6. 6Many environmental words have related forms: pollute → pollution, protect → protection, conserve → conservation.
