Listening: A Radio Interview

Listen to a radio interview and answer the questions.

Before you listen, read the questions quickly so you know what information to listen for. On the first listening, try to understand the general idea of the interview — who is speaking and what the main topic is. On the second listening, focus on the specific details: names, numbers, times, and reasons. Always base your answer on what the speakers actually say, not on what you already know about the topic.

Key terms

key words — Important words in a question that tell you what information to listen for in the audio.
gist — The general idea or main topic of what someone is saying.
detail — A specific piece of information, such as a name, number, time, or reason.
prediction — A guess about what you will hear, based on reading the questions first.
inference — A conclusion you reach by thinking about what the speaker said, even if they did not say it directly.
💡Note

Pay attention to the first and last lines of the interview — they often tell you the main topic.

🚫Common mistake

A common mistake is choosing an answer just because you heard the same word in the audio. Make sure the meaning matches, not just the words.
