Read texts about culture, the arts and ideas.

Reading comprehension at B1-B2 level requires you to identify the main idea, locate specific details, and make simple inferences. Always read the passage first to understand the general meaning before looking at the questions. When you encounter an unfamiliar word, use the surrounding sentences to guess its meaning — this is called using context clues. For every question, go back to the text and find evidence for your answer rather than relying on memory alone.

Key terms

main idea — The most important point or central message that the writer wants to communicate in a text.
supporting detail — A specific piece of information, fact, or example that explains or proves the main idea.
inference — A conclusion you reach by combining clues from the text with your own reasoning — reading between the lines.
vocabulary in context — Guessing the meaning of an unfamiliar word by looking at the words and sentences around it.
skim — Reading quickly to get the general idea or overall topic of a text without focusing on every word.
scan — Reading quickly to find a specific piece of information such as a name, date, or number.

✎How to Answer a Detail Question
  1. 1Step 1: Read the question carefully to understand exactly what information you need to find.
  2. 2Step 2: Scan the passage for key words from the question (names, dates, places).
  3. 3Step 3: Find the sentence that contains the answer and read it closely.
  4. 4Step 4: Check that your chosen answer matches exactly what the text says — do not add your own ideas.

Don't choose an answer just because it sounds correct or matches your personal opinion — always check it against the passage.

When a question asks about the main idea, avoid choosing answers that are true but too narrow (only a small detail) or too broad (goes beyond what the text actually says).
