Common personality and feeling words with their opposites
- 1Situation: Your best friend is moving to another city.
- 2Step 1: Think about how you feel. Do you feel good or bad about this?
- 3Step 2: You feel bad because you will miss your friend.
- 4Step 3: The best word is 'sad'. You say: 'I am sad that you are moving away.'
Learners often confuse 'bored' and 'boring'. 'Bored' is how YOU feel: 'I am bored.' 'Boring' describes the thing: 'This film is boring.'
The word 'funny' can mean 'making you laugh' or 'strange'. In this lesson it means 'making you laugh'.
You can use 'very' before most of these words: 'very happy', 'very tired', 'very kind'.
Rules
- 1Personality words (kind, shy, funny, brave, polite, lazy, friendly, clever) describe what a person is like — they do not change quickly.
- 2Feeling words (happy, sad, tired, angry, excited, bored, scared, hungry, thirsty, worried) describe how you feel right now — they can change quickly.
- 3Use 'I am' or 'He is' / 'She is' before both types: 'I am happy' (feeling), 'She is kind' (personality).
- 4Some words have clear opposites: happy ↔ sad, brave ↔ scared, polite ↔ rude.
- 5'Favourite' is not a feeling or a personality word — it tells what you like best.
- 6Do not confuse 'bored' (how you feel) with 'boring' (what makes you feel that way).
