Listening: A Podcast Interview

Listen to short podcast interviews where a host talks to a guest, then answer the questions.

Before you listen, read the questions quickly so you know what to listen for. The first time you listen, try to understand the general idea — who is talking and what the topic is. The second time, listen for the details: names, numbers, times, and reasons. Always check your answers by thinking about what the speaker really said.

Key terms

gist — the main idea or general meaning of what someone says
key words — important words that carry the main information, like names, places, and numbers
detail — a small piece of information, such as a time, a reason, or a number
inference — an idea you understand from the audio even though the speaker does not say it directly
context — the words and situation around a new word that help you guess its meaning
💡Note

Listen to the whole conversation once before you try to answer any questions. The first time, just get the general idea.

⚠️Caution

One wrong answer can seem right because it uses a word from the audio. Always check if the meaning matches, not just the words.

🚫Common mistake

Many students stop listening when they hear a familiar word and choose that answer too quickly. Listen to the whole sentence — the speaker may say something that changes the meaning.
