Listening: An Announcement

Listen to a public announcement and answer the questions.

Before you listen, read all the questions carefully. During the first listening, try to understand the general idea and do not worry about every word. In the second listening, focus on the key words and specific details like times, places and numbers. Always choose your answer based on what you hear in the audio, not on what you think might be true.

Key terms

key words — important words in the audio that help you find the answer, like names, numbers and places
gist — the general idea or main point of what you hear
detail — a small but important piece of information in the audio
distractor — a wrong answer choice that looks or sounds correct but is not
inference — an answer you can work out from what you hear, even if it is not said directly

You will hear each audio clip two times. Use the first time to understand the main idea and the second time to catch the details.
